Škoda — a Workhorse on Proven VAG Engineering
Škoda's main advantage is the combination of a reliable group platform and low running costs. The same engines and gearboxes as in the Volkswagen and Audi, but parts for a Škoda are usually more available and cheaper, and the marque itself is simpler to service. The platform is well understood and the typical traits are known in advance, so the repair is predictable.
That is exactly what we rely on: clear diagnostics, a justified scope of work and a real choice of parts. For a practical marque this approach gives a noticeable saving against an authorised station.
The Octavia, Superb and High Mileages — What We Watch
The Octavia and Superb often cover hundreds of thousands of kilometres as family, company and taxi cars. At such mileages prevention matters, not repair once it has broken. What we check first on high-mileage cars:
- the condition of the timing chain or belt by the specific engine and their replacement intervals;
- the oil and filter in the DSG gearbox — at high mileages this is critical;
- the diesel particulate filter, the EGR and the injectors on TDI diesels;
- the condition of the suspension and the bushes, which wear from intensive use;
- the cooling system and leaks, to avoid letting it reach overheating.
This approach lets a Škoda run reliably for the long haul without expensive surprises.
TSI and TDI Engines, the DSG Gearbox
A Škoda has the same engines as the group's other marques: petrol TSI (1.0, 1.5, 2.0) and TDI diesels (1.6, 2.0). On the TSI the chain or belt by generation and carbon build-up on direct injection are worth attention; on the TDI the emissions system (DPF, EGR, AdBlue). The DSG gearbox needs servicing: the wet version has an oil and filter change schedule. More on the group's automated gearboxes on the DSG servicing page.
iV Plug-in Hybrids and the Electric Enyaq
Škoda is developing electrification: the Octavia iV and Superb iV plug-in hybrids and the fully electric Enyaq. A plug-in hybrid combines a petrol engine with a traction battery charged from the mains, while the Enyaq is a pure electric car. As a garage with hybrid expertise, we confidently diagnose this part — the battery, the charging system and the power electronics — and also handle brakes, suspension, bodywork and electrics. If you have an iV or an Enyaq, that falls squarely within our field. For model specifications and technical data, see the official Škoda website.
