The small size is deceptive: the Smart has its own character. The classic fortwo is built with the engine at the rear, which makes access to some components unusual, and its automated gearbox has characteristic traits. The current Smarts are already electric, needing work on the high-voltage section. As a result, Smart owners are often turned away at ordinary workshops.

The Petrol fortwo and the Automated Gearbox — a Common Topic

On the petrol fortwo and forfour the most common reason for a visit is the automated gearbox (an automated clutch). Over time the clutch actuator wears, and jerks and delays at shifts appear. This is familiar territory for us: we diagnose the gearbox and the actuator, carry out adjustment or repair, and are in no hurry to replace the whole unit where servicing will do.

The rear-mounted engine calls for care during engine and cooling work, but for us it is a familiar layout.

From 2020 Smart in Europe switched to electric drive: first the EQ fortwo and forfour with a small city battery, then the current #1 and #3 on a new platform. This is technology with a traction battery, power electronics and a charging system.
