Is a BMW Expensive to Keep — Myth or Truth?
Both. A BMW really can ruin an owner — but usually when servicing is done "once it has broken". Most expensive BMW repairs grow out of inexpensive jobs not done in time: a small leak turns into oil starvation, a tired water pump into overheating, a skipped gearbox oil change into a gearbox repair.
The approach that makes a BMW affordable to keep is simple: know the weak points of the specific model and service them ahead of time, rather than waiting for a warning light. That is exactly how we work.
BMW Weak Points Best Not Neglected
Different generations have their own traits, but there are components we look at almost always: the cooling system (the electric water pump, the thermostat), leaks through gaskets (the rocker-cover gasket, the oil filter housing), the timing chain on some diesels and the VANOS variable valve timing. Direct injection on petrol engines produces carbon build-up over time, and intake-port cleaning is sometimes needed.
The main point is the price difference between "servicing in time" and "neglecting":
| Weak point | If neglected | If serviced in time |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling system (pump, thermostat) | Overheating, risk to the engine | Planned component replacement |
| Leaks through gaskets | Oil starvation, expensive repair | Gasket replacement |
| Timing chain (some diesels) | Snap and a full rebuild | Chain replacement by condition |
| ZF gearbox oil | Gearbox repair | Oil and filter change |
That is the answer to the question of cost: a BMW is not expensive in itself, but in a neglected state.
The ZF Gearbox and xDrive All-Wheel Drive — There's No "Lifetime" Oil
Many BMWs have a ZF automatic — one of the best gearboxes in its class. The maker often calls its oil "lifetime", but in practice a timely oil and filter change noticeably extends the gearbox's life and prevents an expensive repair. We recommend servicing the ZF by condition and mileage rather than believing in "lifetime" oil.
On all-wheel-drive BMWs with the xDrive system the transfer box and its drive are worth attention — we check their condition during servicing.
Hybrid BMWs — the 330e, X5 45e and Mild Hybrid
BMW is actively developing plug-in hybrids (330e, 530e, X5 45e and others) and mild hybrids on its newer engines. This is technology with a traction or assistance battery, power electronics and its own operating logic. As a garage with hybrid expertise, we diagnose and service this part in detail — the battery, the charger and the electronics — not just the conventional engine. If you have a plug-in hybrid BMW, that falls squarely within our field. For model specifications and technical data, see the official BMW website.
