1. What wheel alignment is
Alignment is the set of angles at which the wheels sit relative to the body and the road. The three most important are:
Key angles
Toe — whether the wheels point straight ahead, inward or outward. It has the biggest effect on tyre wear and handling.
Camber — the tilt of the wheel from vertical. Wrong camber wears the tyre on one side.
Caster — responsible for directional stability and the steering wheel self-returning to centre.
Every car’s manufacturer specifies exact values for these angles. Over time — through suspension wear, impacts and normal use — the real setting drifts from the factory spec, and then adjustment is needed.

Note: Pulling to one side can also be caused by uneven tyre pressure or a brake fault. That is why a good workshop checks the cause first, then does the alignment — otherwise the adjustment just masks the real problem.
3. When to have the alignment done
Have it measured if:
you replaced suspension or steering parts (arms, tie rods, ends, shock absorbers)
you hit a kerb or pothole hard, or ran over an obstacle
you are fitting a new set of tyres (so they do not wear out early)
any of the symptoms above have appeared
as prevention — roughly every 2 years or 30,000 km

4. What 3D alignment looks like
Modern 3D alignment uses cameras and target boards mounted on the wheels. The system measures all angles simultaneously with high precision and compares them against your car maker’s database. On that basis the mechanic adjusts the setting precisely.
