Fuel prices hurt, and LPG is back in favour as a way to genuinely cut driving costs. But does gas pay off in your car? At Hybrid Master in Katowice we fit and service LPG systems, and we know the answer depends on a few concrete factors — not on advertising promises.
This article explains how LPG works, at what mileage it pays for itself, what happens to the engine and what servicing involves — specifics, no myths.
1. How an LPG system works
LPG is a propane-butane mix, stored as a liquid under pressure in a tank. Modern sequential systems (4th generation) have their own gas injectors and a controller that works with the car’s computer. The engine starts on petrol and, once warm, automatically switches to gas.
An LPG car is a dual-fuel setup — you can switch to petrol at any time, which extends range and adds flexibility. It is an important advantage many drivers forget.
2. Does LPG pay off — the numbers
LPG economics rest on a simple fact: a litre of gas costs roughly half the price of petrol. Gas consumption is about 10–15% higher than petrol, so the real fuel saving is usually 40–45%.
What affects the payoff
For example: with a saving of around 25–35 gr per kilometre and 25,000 km a year, the system can pay for itself in about a year, and after that it simply lowers your running costs.
3. Who LPG pays off for
LPG is a good choice if:
4. What LPG does to the engine
Gas burns at a slightly higher temperature than petrol, so the valves and their seats are more stressed. With a well-matched, well-maintained system this is not a problem, but it is worth remembering:
What to keep an eye on
Modern sequential systems are gentle on the engine, and many cars have covered hundreds of thousands of kilometres on LPG without trouble. The key is a correct install and regular servicing.
5. Servicing an LPG system
Gas equipment, like any system, needs periodic servicing. It is the condition for both savings and safety:

6. Tank certification (UDT)
An LPG tank is a pressure component under technical supervision. A steel tank is valid for 10 years from its production date — after that it must be replaced (re-certifying the old one rarely pays). Fitting a system also involves type-approval and an entry in the registration document. These are formalities worth knowing before you decide.
7. LPG myths
“The car loses power on gas” — with a modern system the drop is minimal (a few per cent) and unnoticeable in everyday driving. “LPG destroys the engine” — a poorly matched, neglected system can harm it; a well-fitted, serviced one does not. “LPG is dangerous” — the tank and system have many safeguards and are supervised; fitted correctly they are safe.
