Winter is the toughest season for any vehicle. Low temperatures, road salt, icy windows and reduced visibility — check the complete list of things you should inspect before the winter season.

Autumn in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin can catch you off guard. One day it's a dozen or so degrees and sunny, and a week later — frost, black ice and snowfall all night long. That's exactly why preparing your car for winter in Katowice is worth planning before mid-October, rather than waiting for the first frost. Every year at Hybrid Master we service hundreds of cars before the seasonal change, and we see exactly which mistakes drivers make. This article sums up our experience — a complete checklist you can check yourself or entrust to us during a single inspection.

Mechanic's tip: The best time for a winter service is October — workshops aren't overloaded yet, and temperatures haven't dropped below zero. Waiting until November often means week-long queues and unavailability of winter tires in popular sizes.

1. Winter tires — when, how and what to check

Tires are the absolute priority when preparing a car for winter. No other component has as much influence on safety in difficult conditions as properly chosen tires. In Poland, regulations don't require winter tires by law, but their absence in winter conditions can result in a fine for not adapting the vehicle to road conditions — and more importantly, a serious accident.

When to fit winter tires?

The rule is simple: when the temperature regularly drops below +7°C. In such conditions, the rubber compound of summer tires hardens and loses grip — even on dry surfaces. In Silesia, the winter season usually starts in mid-October and lasts until March–April. It's not worth waiting for snow — accidents on dry but cold asphalt happen just as often.

How to check the condition of winter tires?

Winter tires have a minimum legal tread depth of 1.6 mm, but in practice winter tires lose their properties already at a depth below 4 mm. Check the wear indicators (TWI — Tread Wear Indicator) located in the tread grooves. If the tread is at the level of the indicator or close to it — it's time for new tires. Also check the age of the tires: after 6–8 years the rubber ages and hardens regardless of tread depth. You'll find the production date in the DOT code on the tire sidewall (e.g. DOT 2318 = week 23 of 2018).

Checklist — winter tires

Tread depth min. 4 mm (check with a 2 PLN coin — if the whole digit is visible, the tires need replacing)
Tire age does not exceed 6–8 years from the production date (DOT code)
Tire pressure matches the standard for the given model (label on the driver's door edge)
No cracks, bulges or damage on the tire sidewall
Snowflake symbol (3PMSF) on the sidewall — only such tires are certified for winter driving
Wheel balancing after fitting (steering wheel vibrations are a sign of imbalance)
Wheel bolts torqued to the manufacturer's recommended value (especially after fitting steel rims)

It's worth remembering that all-season (4-season) tires with the 3PMSF symbol are an acceptable compromise if your driving style doesn't require extreme winter conditions. However, they are clearly inferior to dedicated winter tires on snow and ice. If you commute to work in Katowice or the surrounding area every day and sometimes take long trips on expressways — investing in a dedicated winter set pays off.

2. Battery — winter enemy number one

The battery is one of the components that fails most often in winter — and this is entirely predictable. At −10°C, battery capacity drops by as much as 30–40% compared to summer, and starting a cold engine draws significantly more current than in summer. That's exactly why battery service before winter is an absolute necessity, especially if you have an older battery or your car stands in a garage for longer periods.

How to assess the condition of the battery?

Resting voltage alone (about 12.6 V) says nothing about actual capacity and starting ability. A reliable assessment requires a load test (the so-called CCA test) — performed with a special tester. At Hybrid Master we perform it free of charge during an inspection. A result below 50% of nominal capacity means the battery may not survive the winter.

The age of the battery is an important clue: standard batteries last 4–6 years, AGM — 5–8 years. If your battery is more than 5 years old, it's worth replacing it preventively in autumn, before it forces an emergency tow at 6 a.m. on a frosty morning.

CCA load test at the workshop (result below 50% of nominal CCA = replacement)
Battery age — standard batteries are worth replacing preventively after 5 years
Terminals and cables — no corrosion, loose connections or cracked insulation
No bleaching, cracks or bulges on the battery case
In cars with Start&Stop — check that an AGM battery is fitted (not a regular one), because Start&Stop wears out a standard battery within 1–2 seasons
Check the alternator — if it isn't charging properly (14.0–14.7 V with the engine running), even a new battery will discharge quickly
Watch out with hybrids and plug-in hybrids: In hybrid cars (Toyota, Lexus, Honda), besides the 12V battery you also have a high-voltage traction battery. Winter doesn't wear it out the way it does the "12V", but during long stops in freezing weather it's worth knowing that the electric-mode range decreases. 3. Fluids — what can freeze, and what can't

In low temperatures, unsuitable fluids can lead to mechanical damage that is difficult and costly to repair. Three of them are crucial in winter: coolant, windshield washer fluid and engine oil.

Coolant (antifreeze)

The coolant's job isn't just to cool the engine, but also to protect against freezing. Fresh coolant usually protects down to −35°C or even −40°C. Problems arise when the fluid is diluted with water or old and has lost its properties. Recommended replacement: every 2 years or every 60,000 km. Concentration can be checked with a refractometer — it takes literally 30 seconds.

Windshield washer fluid

Water in the washer fluid reservoir will freeze at the first frost and can damage the pump or crack the tank. Use only washer fluid rated for winter — check what temperature it's designed for. In Silesia, it's worth using fluid rated to −20°C or −25°C. Cheaper fluids rated to only −10°C may prove insufficient during harsher frosts in February.

Engine oil

In winter, the oil's viscosity at low temperatures matters, indicated by the first number (e.g. 5W-30: "5W" indicates cold-weather properties). If the manufacturer approves 0W or 5W oils — these are the preferred choice in winter, because the engine is better protected during a cold start. Don't switch to single-grade oils (e.g. SAE 30) in cars with a modern engine — they may not provide adequate protection at −15°C.

Checklist — fluids

Coolant concentration — checked with a refractometer, protection required down to at least −35°C
No rusty discoloration or sediment in the coolant reservoir
Winter washer fluid — rated to at least −20°C, reservoir full
Check the engine oil level and quality (dark, sticky oil = time for a change)
Brake fluid — check water content (above 3% moisture, replacement is recommended; boiling point drops dramatically with wet fluid)

4. Brake system — check before snow hides the problems

In winter, braking distance can increase by two times or more — that's a physical fact independent of the car. That's why the condition of the brake system is absolutely critical. If you have any doubts about the state of your brakes, don't put off the inspection until spring.

Brake pads and discs

The minimum brake pad thickness depends on the model, but the general rule is: below 3–4 mm of friction material — replacement is mandatory. Check the condition through the wheel openings or ask your mechanic. Brake discs may have surface rust (normal after periods of standing) or grooves and excessive thinning — this requires replacement. Discs with uneven thickness are particularly dangerous — they cause vibrations during braking and can crack unexpectedly.

ABS and assistance systems

The ABS system is especially important in winter — it prevents wheel lock-up when braking on a slippery surface. Check whether the ABS warning light stays off at startup — if it lights up, the system requires diagnostics. Similarly, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) should be functional — it's what keeps the car on a straight course during a skid.

Brake pad thickness — min. 3–4 mm of friction material
Condition of brake discs — no deep corrosion, grooves, or uneven wear
Brake fluid — level and moisture content (replacement threshold: above 3% water or boiling point below 155°C)
No squealing or vibration when braking
ABS and ESP warning lights stay off after starting the car
Handbrake (parking brake) works properly — the car doesn't roll on a slope
Brake lines — no corrosion, signs of leaks, or cracks (especially in flexible rubber hoses)

5. Lighting — shorter days in winter, visibility is key

In December and January, the sun sets in Katowice before 4:00 p.m. This means most drivers travel home from work in the dark. Working lights aren't just a legal requirement — they're a matter of life and death, especially in fog and snowfall.

Checklist — lighting

All bulbs working — low beam, high beam, sidelights, rear lights, brake lights, reverse, turn signals
Headlight lenses free of yellowing and scratches (they reduce brightness by up to 50%)
Headlight alignment adjusted (important after fitting winter tires and winter gear in the trunk)
Fog lights — working and properly aligned (use only when visibility is below 50 m)
Headlight washers — working and filled with winter fluid (cars with xenon/LED are legally required to have them)

6. Windows, wipers and defrosting

Visibility drops dramatically in winter. Icy windows, a fogged-up interior and worn wipers are a simple recipe for a collision. Fortunately, these things are easy and cheap to check.

Winter wipers

Traditional frame wipers collect snow and ice under the metal frame, which causes loss of contact with the glass. Winter wipers (frameless) eliminate this problem. It's worth replacing them as early as October — they cost 30–60 PLN per set and make a huge difference during snowfall.

Rear window and heating

Check that the rear window heating grid works properly — a bright light shone from behind will reveal breaks in the wire. If you see dark gaps, the heating doesn't work in that spot. A lack of rear window heating is a real hazard when approaching intersections from behind.

Winter wipers fitted and free of signs of wear (streaking, gaps)
Rear wiper working (if the car is equipped with one)
Rear window heating works (check visually when switched on)
Side mirror heating works
No cracks or chips on the windshield (temperature accelerates crack growth)
Washers under pressure and with the right winter fluid
In cars with a HUD navigation display — check that the display isn't disrupted (distance from the glass may change with defroster use)
Practical tip: The night before an expected frost, lay a newspaper or a special windshield cover on the glass. In the morning you'll lift it off along with the ice — no scraping, no stress. Available at any auto parts store for about 15–30 PLN.

7. Suspension and steering system — winter reveals hidden problems

Winter roads in Silesia — with snow, ice, curb impacts and deep ruts — are extreme conditions for the suspension. Many components that seemed perfectly fine in summer start to loudly announce themselves in winter. A suspension inspection before winter is an investment in safety, not an unnecessary expense.

Checklist — suspension and steering system

Shock absorbers — no oil leaks, the car doesn't bounce after driving over a bump
Control arm bushings and pivots — no play when rocking the wheel (check in a pit or on a lift)
Ball joint and tie rod end boots — no cracks or tears (dust and water get in instantly)
Steering rods and tie rod ends — no play, steering wheel tracks straight
Power steering fluid level (in cars with hydraulic power steering)
Wheel alignment — worth checking after switching to winter tires or hitting a curb

8. Engine and cooling system — cold start in winter

Starting a cold engine is the biggest test for all mechanical components. The oil is thick, rubber and plastic are stiffer, metal has contracted. In a car that hasn't been serviced for a while, winter is exactly when many failures can occur.

Ice scraper and snow brush (minimum — ideally a long brush with a telescopic handle)
Jumper cables or a portable jump-start power bank
Lock de-icer (windows and locks can freeze overnight)
Snow chains or anti-slip pads (for mountain routes)

Warning triangle and reflective vest (mandatory — keep them in the cabin, not the trunk)

Road salt damages not only the bodywork (corrosion), but also the brake systems, calipers, lines and chassis components.   • Check the condition of the underbody's anti-corrosion protection — if the car is more than 5 years old and has never been treated, it's worth investing in an underbody spray before winter.
  • Monitor your tire pressure — for every 10°C drop in temperature, tire pressure drops by about 0.07–0.1 bar. Check it every 2–3 weeks.
  • Don't ignore noises during a cold engine start — knocks and metallic sounds when starting are warning signs, not "normal winter behavior".

11. Hybrids in winter — what to know about Toyota, Lexus, Honda cars

The traction battery in winter

Lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride traction batteries in hybrids lose some capacity in winter. In a Toyota Yaris Hybrid at −10°C, you may notice that the electric motor engages less often and the car runs on the combustion engine almost all the time. That's normal — no need to worry. However, if your car failed to start several times and the HV battery warning light glowed orange — be sure to visit a specialized hybrid workshop.

The 12V battery in a hybrid

In hybrids, the 12V battery is smaller than in combustion-engine cars, because a hybrid has a differently organized electrical system.
