Hybrid and EV servicing
— what really needs attention

The “maintenance-free” hybrid is a myth. We explain what really needs servicing on a hybrid and EV — from the traction battery to the AC with POE oil.

Hybrids and electric cars have a reputation for being “maintenance-free”. It is a convenient myth that can cost dearly. Yes, they have fewer classic jobs, but new ones appear — specific to the electric drive and high voltage. At Hybrid Master in Katowice we specialise in servicing hybrids and EVs and know what really needs attention.

This article explains what servicing a hybrid and an EV involves, how to look after the traction battery and why some jobs matter more here than on a petrol car.

Mechanic’s tip: In a hybrid the combustion engine often runs briefly and cold, so the oil is changed mainly once a year — the time interval matters more here than the mileage one.

1. The “hybrids need no servicing” myth

A hybrid or electric drivetrain really does remove some classic faults, but it does not exempt you from servicing. The battery, the electronics cooling, the brakes, the AC with its electric compressor and the 12 V battery all need checking. A neglected “electric” car can generate expensive failures that one inspection would have prevented.

2. The traction battery — the heart of the drive

The high-voltage battery is the most expensive component, but also one of the most durable — well-used batteries last many years and hundreds of thousands of kilometres. The key is state-of-health (SOH) diagnostics, which show the real capacity and cell condition.

What we watch for on the battery

SOH diagnostics and checking cell balance
a working battery cooling system — overheating shortens its life
no faults in the battery and inverter control units
range / EV mode retained against the norm for the model

3. Fluids and electronics cooling

Hybrids and EVs have separate cooling circuits — for the battery, inverter and power electronics. The fluid in these systems loses its properties over time and needs changing per the manufacturer’s schedule. A hybrid adds classic engine oil (changed once a year), and an EV has oil in the reduction gear. Neglecting electronics cooling risks overheating and a costly failure.

4. Brakes — used less, but not forgotten

Thanks to regenerative braking, the pads and discs on a hybrid and EV work less and wear more slowly. Paradoxically this creates a new problem: corrosion. Little-used discs and calipers rust, and pads can seize. So the brakes on such a car need regular checking, cleaning and lubrication of the guides — even if the friction material is still thick.

5. AC with an electric compressor

Warning — POE oil, not PAG: The AC on hybrids and EVs has an electric compressor that needs special POE oil with high electrical resistance. Using ordinary PAG oil risks a high-voltage short circuit and a destroyed compressor. Only have such a car’s AC serviced where they have the correct oil — we do.

6. The 12 V battery — small but crucial

Besides the traction battery, a hybrid and EV have an ordinary 12 V battery that powers the electronics and “wakes” the whole system. It is smaller than in a petrol car, but when it weakens it can cause strange, hard-to-diagnose faults — from starting problems to warning messages. It is worth checking its condition and replacing it preventively.

7. How often to service a hybrid and EV

A rough maintenance plan

Engine oil (hybrid) — once a year or every 10,000–15,000 km
Cabin filter — yearly / every 15,000 km
Brake fluid — every 2 years; brake checks and lubrication more often
Coolants (battery/inverter) — per the manufacturer’s schedule
Battery SOH diagnostics — periodically, especially when buying used
AC — serviced with the correct POE oil

Frequently asked questions

Does a hybrid really need servicing?
+
Yes. It has fewer classic jobs, but needs battery, electronics-cooling, brake, AC and 12 V battery care. “Maintenance-free” is a myth.
How long does the traction battery last?
+
Well-used batteries last many years and hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Their condition is assessed by SOH (State of Health) diagnostics — worth doing, for example, when buying used.
How often to change hybrid oil?
+
Usually once a year or every 10,000–15,000 km. The engine often runs briefly and cold, so the time interval matters more here than the mileage one.
Why do hybrid brakes corrode?
+
Because regen braking offloads the brakes — they work less and wear more slowly, so discs and calipers rust more easily. That is why they need cleaning and guide lubrication.
How is hybrid AC servicing different?
+
The compressor is electric and needs special POE oil with high resistance. Using ordinary PAG oil risks a high-voltage short circuit and a destroyed compressor.
Do you service fully electric cars?
+
Yes. We handle battery and electronics cooling, reduction-gear oil, brakes, AC with POE oil, the cabin filter and battery and 12 V diagnostics.

Summary

  1. The “maintenance-free” hybrid is a myth — it needs different but real servicing.
  2. Battery: SOH diagnostics and working cooling are the basics.
  3. Brakes used less = risk of corrosion; they need cleaning.
  4. The AC requires POE oil — never PAG.
  5. Change hybrid oil once a year; don’t forget the 12 V battery.
