Air conditioning is one of the most underrated systems in a car. It works unnoticed for years — until, on a hot July day in Katowice, it suddenly blows warm air, or starts to smell unpleasant. Every season at Hybrid Master we see dozens of cars where the problem could have been solved with one inexpensive service, before it grew into a costly compressor repair.
This article explains how often to service your AC, how to tell it needs attention, and exactly what a proper service includes — no myths, no upselling.
Mechanic's tip: AC naturally loses about 10–15% of its refrigerant per year — this is normal (permeation through the hoses), not a fault. That is why even a healthy system cools noticeably worse after 2–3 years and needs a top-up.
1. How AC works and why it wears out
Air conditioning doesn't "make cold" — it removes heat from the cabin and releases it outside via a circulating refrigerant. The heart of the system is the compressor, lubricated by a special oil that circulates with the refrigerant. That is why low refrigerant is dangerous: a compressor running "dry" seizes up, and replacing it costs around 1,500–3,500 PLN.
Over time the system loses refrigerant through hoses and seals, the oil ages, and moisture settles on the evaporator (hidden behind the dashboard) — an ideal environment for mould and bacteria. So AC, like any system with a working fluid, needs periodic servicing.
2. How often to service the AC
Recommended intervals
Refrigerant top-up + leak check — every 1–2 years (after 2 years the loss is already noticeable)
Disinfection / anti-bacterial treatment — once a year, ideally in spring before the season (mould grows all year round)
Cabin filter replacement — every 15,000 km or once a year (a clogged filter = weak airflow and damp)
Pre-summer check — April–May, before the workshops fill up
A good habit regardless of intervals: run the AC for a few minutes in winter too, e.g. once a week. It keeps the oil moving and protects the compressor seals from drying out — and the AC is excellent at clearing fogged-up windows.
3. Signs your AC needs a service
Warning signs
Cooling is clearly weaker than it used to be, and takes longer to get cold
An unpleasant, musty smell comes from the vents (especially after start-up)
The compressor is noisy, with knocking or rattling when the AC switches on
Windows fog up despite the AC being on, or water appears under the dash inside the cabin
The AC "switches itself off" — often a protection triggered by low refrigerant
Don't top up refrigerant "by eye": The popular DIY cans from car shops mask the symptom but don't fix the leak — and overfilling damages the compressor. A proper top-up is done by weight, after recovering the old refrigerant, with a leak check.
4. What a professional AC service includes
A proper service is not just "a gas refill". At Hybrid Master we do it on a professional AC service station, in a closed cycle:

Recharging by weight with the correct amount of refrigerant (R134a or R1234yf — depending on the car) plus an oil top-up

Cabin filter replacement and checking the condensate drain is clear
Measuring the outlet temperature — confirming cooling performance
R134a vs R1234yf: Cars built roughly from 2017 use the newer refrigerant R1234yf, older ones use R134a. They are incompatible — mixing them, or an error, damages the system. We determine the correct refrigerant from the VIN and the label under the bonnet.
5. Mould, bacteria and your health
Mould and bacteria develop on the damp evaporator. The result is not just a bad smell — it's a genuine health issue. Spores blown into the cabin can trigger allergies, a runny nose, coughing, eye and throat irritation, and can aggravate asthma in sensitive people. This matters especially if you carry children.
That is why a yearly disinfection is hygiene, not cosmetics. A simple habit helps too: a few minutes before you arrive, switch off the compressor (the A/C button) and leave the fan on — the evaporator dries out and mould grows more slowly.
6. AC in hybrids and electric cars
In hybrids and EVs (Toyota, Lexus, as well as fully electric cars) the AC has an electric compressor, not a belt-driven one. This changes the servicing rules in one crucial respect.
Warning — POE oil, not PAG: Electric compressors require a special POE oil with high electrical resistance. Using ordinary PAG oil (as in combustion cars) risks a high-voltage short circuit and a destroyed compressor (a cost in the thousands). Only have a hybrid/EV AC serviced where they have the correct oil and know-how — we do.
7. The most common faults
What fails most often
Leaks — most often a corroded condenser (the AC radiator at the front), seals (o-rings) and hoses
Compressor — seizure after running low on refrigerant or oil; sometimes the electromagnetic clutch
Clogged condenser — insects, leaves and salt reduce cooling, especially in traffic
Blocked condensate drain — water collects in the cabin (a wet mat under the passenger's feet)
Sensors and electronics — the pressure switch, air-blend flaps, the climate-control module
